Cuando nos hablan de ortodoncia nos viene a la mente, inmediatamente, la imagen de brackets metálicos para alinear los dientes, ¿cierto?
Sin embargo, la ortodoncia abarca mucho más que eso. Toma en cuenta la alineación de los dientes dentro de los maxilares superiores e inferiores por cuestiones estéticas. También por razones funcionales y para facilitar la higiene. Además de la relación de ambos maxilares entre sí y con el resto de la estructura craneofacial.
Sabemos que unos dientes apiñados dificultan considerablemente la higiene bucal. Sobre todo en los espacios interproximales que son demasiado estrechos.  Por lo cual serán más propensos a retener placa dental. Lo cual a su vez aumentará la propensión a padecer caries por ser más difíciles de limpiar con el cepillado dental y uso de seda o cinta dental.
